Extend the Life of your Suit

Here are a few tips to maintain the great look of your custom suit:

1. Hang it Up: Always hang your suit in a well-spaced area when you’re not wearing it. Use a proper wooden hanger with a wide-spread contoured shape to preserve the shape – cedar wood absorbs moisture as well as act as a moth repellant. If you keep it in a suit bag, leave the zip open a bit to let air in and out.

2. Give it a Break: Try not to wear the same suit every day to avoid deterioration. The wool fibers of your suit need time to rest, so rotate your suits throughout the week. Take small, daily measures to keep your suit clean such as laying a napkin across your lap during meals or gently brushing your jacket with a suit brush.

3. Avoid the Cleaners: Dry cleaning will expose your suit to harsh chemicals that will take its toll on the fabric, so only dry clean when necessary. Fabrics of higher micron number (higher than Super 150s wool) are more fragile and more susceptible to wear and tear; frequent dry cleaning will only exacerbate the issue. Instead, care for your suit by asking the cleaners to “STEAM ONLY” or using a garment steamer to get out wrinkles and deodorize it. Avoid using an iron to press your suit as it may damage the fabric.

4. Pack it Properly: Try traveling with a garment bag if you can. If that’s not practical, check out our May newsletter for instructions on how to properly fold and pack a suit. When you don’t have access to a steamer during your travels, hang up your suit in the bathroom using the steam from a hot shower.

3 Helpful Dress Shirt Hacks

July 15th, 2016 Comments off
Here are a few tips to maintain the great look of your custom dress shirts:

1. Go Grey: Wear a grey undershirt or t-shirt under white dress shirts. It more easily matches your skin tone and is less visible than white on white.

2. Remove that Ink Stain: If you get pen ink on your shirt, follow these steps to remove it. (1) Mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and vinegar in a bowl and dab the mixture directly on the stain, leaving it on for at least 5 minutes. (2) Cover the affected area with table salt, leave it for about 5 minutes, then gently scrub the stain with a clean toothbrush. (3) Rinse with hot water until the stain is completely lifted. (4) Wash or dry clean the shirt to get it looking good as new.

3. No Iron? No Problem: Here are a couple solutions to remove wrinkles if you don’t have an iron handy. (1) Boil water in a metal pot, pour it out, and use the bottom of the hot pot to smooth out the shirt. (2) Boil water in a kettle and hold your shirt above the steam to get rid of any creases. (3) Hang your shirt in the bathroom while you take a hot shower.
